The format and exercises used in this class will follow the guidelines set forth by the International Zen Dojo of Wisconsin, a Rinzai Zen temple of the Chozen-ji lineage, located in rural Spring Green WI. The Chozen-ji lineage of zen training was founded by zen master Omori Sogen Rotaishi who was also a Kendo (sword) and Shodo (calligraphy) master. Keeping in that tradition, the class will begin with zazen(seated meditation), using cushions seated on the floor or by sitting on a stool, and will include learning to swing a wooden sword with the proper footwork, posture and breath. A 10 sequence MuI-Tai-ji Zen form will be taught as a way to integrate breath and movement. Also included in the class
will be an introduction to zen calligraphy(Shodo), used as a way to deepen and refine our breath and posture. Breathing exercises, yin yoga and sound resonance work will round out the training. Omori Sogen Rotaishi believed that training in Zen(seated meditation) should include martials arts (kendo, karate, tai-ji, etc..) and traditional fine arts(calligraphy, flute, flower arrangement, etc..) as a way to awaken to our true nature, or as he put it, to become a true human being.
